Statement of Intent

I intend to create a popular, well thought of, music video.
Along with the video, I'll also create an ideal website for the artist chosen, which will additionally have different links to accompanying pages all about the band/artist.

The typical codes and conventions of the dance genre music videos will carefully be followed during my work. I want to ensure it fits into the dance music genre. I will use different types of media language to do this, including using audio over my music video. I still need to select a choice of music, and make sure that it fits into the dance music genre, whilst also appealing to my target audience. I still haven't decided on a final song that I'd like to use.

I will use a range of different camera angles and editing techniques in order to create an attractive, appealing and entertaining music videos which will appeal to my target audience. I'll need to consider the lighting and graphics when filming my video, as I would like to ensure my final video has been well planned and prepared for, rather then a video that has not had much planning or preparation for. The lighting will have a big impact on this, because it sets the mood and will have a big impression on the audience. If I am to follow the dance music genre guidelines, I can hopefully create a video which clearly shows itself to be a dance music video, with the correct lightings, shots and editing skills, put together in a way to attract more of my target audience. I would like to use a range of camera shots including close ups and establishing shots to create depth in the videos however I am aware that certain shots such as birds eye view shots may be unachievable due to location and lack of equipment. I will also use tracking shots and panning in different locations whenever possible to illustrate movement.

The artist will feature in my video, and will dance in some of the shots. The clips which come together to make my video will be structured in a narrative set-out, and whilst the artist will be seen in many of the shots, there will also be other people involved in the video. Several dancers will be seen throughout the video, around the chosen artist and dancing throughout the video's duration. As i am planning on doing a narrative music video, the dancers and artist will all play 'characters' in a 'story' which will play out over the duration of the video.

My dance music video's target audience comes from the A-B demographic of professionals aged 16-24 years old. I must consider their preferences as 16-24 years has a fairly big age gap, which could result i n their interests having large differences. The group will be between the stages of starting off, and possibly even finishing at university, and so will most likely have high standards. The music video must be well planned and of a good quality, whilst still fitting into the music video dance genre. It must also be appealing to the ideology of the demographic group of which my target audience fits into.

I will use a logo to link the branding of the video and the website, which will allow the audience to associate it with the artist. The logo will be featured at the top of my website and will be in a clear and obvious place, so that the audience can notice it as one of the first features they see, and instantly recognise my chosen artist. I will also apply similar colours from the logo to both the website and the video, to create an initial link between the website and video.

The website itself should have similar conventions to other music artist websites and should feature links to more than one main page as stated in the brief. I would like to include links to social media on my page as it is commonly shown on other music websites as a way to unify branding and create more 'social buzz'. A page for merchandise and band information is also commonly shown however these elements may be hard to include as they may require payment settings etc.

The layout of my website will depend heavily on the choice of song. I intend to relate my website to the song and video through the album art which will be created on photoshop. I would like to layer images to create a unique image including the main character in my video narration which would furthermore link the video and website together. I would also like to include information and hyperlinks on the website to more images of production and 'life of the band' to create a synthetic relationship with the audience and enforce the branding.

The audience of the video should link to the  demographic target age of 16 to 25. With this in mind the video should use representations and stereotypes of the age group to link to this particular social group. Zeitgeist mise en scene may be appropriate to ensure the video is current and in line with social culture, however I would also like to link some mise en scene to 1990s culture and the dance genre history. Both male and female genders should be represented in the video however as I intend to create a narrative video one person may have more focus than any secondary characters. The objectification of women is often shown in the genre in music videos  especially where women are shown as a tool for men as opposed to their own person. This objectification is something I aim to fully avoid as from a female perspective it is degrading and overly sexual which is highly inappropriate for the genre and video.

As stated in the brief the industry of music is the Universal Music Group. It is considered one of the "Big Three" record labels, along with Sony Music and Warner Music Group. Due to this I intend to highlight the labelling of the company as it has a great reputation in the industry and will therefore promote my artist. On the UMG website information is provided on the backgrounds of artists signed to their label, allowing for audiences to build up a thorough understanding of the artist. The artists individual website provides information on upcoming songs, videos and tours which would further promote my artist.

Video Analysis: Burn the Witch- Radiohead

T he British children’s TV series the 'Trumptonshire Trilogy’ inspired the Burn the Witch music video by Radiohead. The video shoes an inspector being given a tour around a small town by the mayor. The town itself seems pretty normal, neat and well under-control, however it soon becomes clear this isn't the case as we are introduced to the local residents. From trying to drown one neighbour, to tying someone else up to a tree, the inspector, and equally the audience, are quickly aware not everything is as perfect as it seems, and that the town's residents are actually violent and dangerous on a day to day basis. We see the end of the video showing the inspector being tricked into a large wooden cage-type figure, which has been similarly seen in the 1973 British horror film 'The Wicker Man'. Once locked inside its 'stomach', it is then set alight by the town's people, from which we assume the inspector is left to die, but are shown otherwise as he is see...

Media Language and Representation: Lucozade & Shelter

Lucozade:   This Lucozade advert want to attract an audience, and to do so they need to get people's attention. They've done this by using a large, bold font, that stands out and is easily noticeable. Not only is it large, and takes up a lot of the advert, but it is also a dark navy which contrasts with the sky-blue background and the black and grey on the model, making it more viewable. The advert itself is simple, and is taken up by about 45% model and 45% text, with the other 10% being the bright-blue background. The angle of the camera is cleverly positioned to define the model, Gareth Bale, to have strong facial features, to make him visually appealing to the audience. This is another technique used to attract an audience, which advertises the product to a larger, and wider, audience range and therefore to engage them with the advert and the product. ''In a different league'' links to both football and the product being advertised. In the football si...

Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack: Research

Massive Attack are an English trip hop group formed in 1988 in Bristol, and consists of Robert "3D" Del Naja, Grant "Daddy G" Marshall and formerly Andy "Mushroom" Vowles. A popular album of theirs would be Blue Lines. It is the debut studio album by English trip hop group Massive Attack, released on their Wild Bunch label through Virgin Records on 8 April 1991, followed by the release of a remastered version of the album on 19 November 2012. The music video follows Shara Nelson around an urban street in down town LA. The camera moves around her body to face her, so when she is walking the camera is in front and reversing in order to catch an edgy video of her walking, and making it more mainstream.
